The hills and plains of Friuli Venezia Giulia preserve a system of festivals, markets and tasting points that crosses celebrated villages and small towns almost unknown to ordinary tourist circuits. Here the wine from the hills of Collio and Colli Orientali meets Prosciutto di San Daniele, brovada, frico and alpine dairy cheeses in seasonal appointments that punctuate the agricultural calendar with almost ritual precision. This guide brings together both established events and minor ones, born from the will of local communities to preserve flavors that would otherwise risk disappearing.
Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region that resembles no other in Italy. The Friulian plain, crossed by the Tagliamento and Torre rivers, produces cheeses, cured meats, cereals and white wines of great character. The hills of Collio goriziano and Colli Orientali del Friuli host vineyards famous throughout Europe, but just a few kilometers away are villages where gastronomic tradition survives far from the spotlight. Festivals born to celebrate the corn harvest or the pressing of olives, weekly farmers' markets, wineries open for direct visits: the fabric is dense and varied.
Alongside major events such as the Festa del Prosciutto di San Daniele or Friuli DOC in Udine, there are village festivals that last only a weekend and attract mainly residents of neighboring municipalities. It is often precisely these minor appointments that offer the most authentic contact with producers, with families that still cook according to recipes passed down orally and with agricultural markets where it is possible to buy products that never reach large-scale distribution.
January and February The winter months are a time for food crafts fairs and small indoor markets. In Cividale del Friuli and in the towns of Val Natisone you will find stalls dedicated to dairy products preserved under salt or aged in cellars. In some villages on the plain, tasting evenings of brovada and muset, the Friulian cotechino, are often organized by local associations without public fanfare.
March and April The approach of spring brings the first festivals linked to wild herbs and asparagus. The municipality of Tavagnacco and towns in the Udine hinterland organize organic markets and events dedicated to native legumes. In Cormons, the heart of Collio, some wineries open for the first tastings of the new vintage.
May It is the month of open wineries across the entire regional territory, with routes through the vineyards of Collio goriziano, Colli Orientali and DOC Friuli Grave. Villages like Prepotto, Dolegna del Collio and Ipplis host tastings directly from producers. In Fagagna, an agricultural market traditionally takes place with fresh cheeses and artisanal cured meats.
June Friuli DOC, the great festival of regional food and wine excellence in Udine, takes place in September, but in June local festivals linked to the solstice and garden produce begin. In San Giovanni al Natisone and neighboring towns you will find appointments dedicated to cherries and small hill fruits.
July and August Summer is the season of the most crowded and frequent local festivals. In San Daniele del Friuli the Prosciutto Festival attracts visitors from all over Italy with tastings, workshops and stalls of local producers. In many towns of Lower Friuli, such as Palazzolo dello Stella and Marano Lagunare, festivals linked to freshwater fish and the lagoon are celebrated. Small villages like Corno di Rosazzo and Manzano offer outdoor evenings with grilled meat and local wine.
September It is the richest month. Friuli DOC in Udine brings wines and typical regional products to the square in a large and accessible format. In Cormons the Grape and Wine Festival takes place, one of the historic appointments of Friulian viticulture. The farmers markets in Gorizia, Pordenone and smaller centers fill up with grapes, squashes, mushrooms and apples. In Nimis and Ramandolo, small towns on the Colli Orientali, wineries welcome visitors during the grape harvest.
October The autumn markets are dominated by truffle, porcini mushrooms, chestnuts and frico. In Gemona del Friuli an autumn agricultural fair traditionally takes place. The frico festival, present in various forms in numerous towns of the foothills, reaches its maximum concentration of appointments during this period.
November and December The Sant'Andrea markets and Christmas markets in the historic centers of Udine, Gorizia and Trieste offer artisanal products, traditional sweets like presnitz and gubana, sweet wines and grappas. In Buttrio and Manzano some wineries offer tastings in open cellars during the final weeks of the year.
The best way to travel through this gastronomic territory is to abandon your planned itinerary for at least one stop. A handwritten sign advertising malga cheese sale along a secondary road, a stand set up in front of the elementary school for the local festival, a family-run winery open on Saturday mornings without a sign: these are the moments when Friuli Venezia Giulia reveals something that no guide can plan. Bring with you a cooler bag, cash, and the willingness to wait a quarter of an hour longer than you expected.
